WKU’s Outdoor Leadership Program is the 2010 recipient of the Wilderness Education Association’s Outstanding Affiliate Award.
The award has been given annually since 2006 to outstanding Wilderness Education Association affiliate programs.
WKU’s Outdoor Leadership Program began in 1991, has been affiliated with WEA since 1991 and is the only program of its kind in Kentucky. An Outdoor Leadership minor was established in 2006.
Students in the Outdoor Leadership Program can receive multiple certifications in a variety of offerings, including “Leave No Trace” Trainers, Project Wild Instructors, Project Wet Instructors, and Kentucky Water Watch Certification.
Students completing the Outdoor Leadership semester may become American Canoe Association certified instructors and can complete the Wilderness First Responder Course.
The Outdoor Leadership Program also offers students the opportunity to develop skills beyond the introductory level with courses including whitewater canoeing, raft guiding, kayaking and fly fishing. Students also participate in numerous service projects, including the Warren County Blueways project trail maintenance, river cleanups and KAPS Canoeing program.
