20 elementary teachers to participate in Kentucky Reading Project at WKU

Twenty elementary school teachers will participate in Kentucky Reading Project (KRP) sessions June 11-24 at WKU.

The teachers are from the following school districts: Owensboro Independent, Daviess County, Glasgow Independent, Logan County, Cumberland County, Hopkins County, Warren County, Todd County, Russellville Independent, Hardin County and Ohio County.

The KRP is a professional development initiative for Kentucky public school elementary (P-5) teachers. WKU and seven other universities participate in the program.

The project is designed to improve student achievement and family involvement in literacy, beginning with kindergarten and continuing through the fifth-grade level. Goals include striving to promote a reflective teaching and learning atmosphere, fostering lifelong learning and encouraging collaborative learning communities.

“This will be the 11th year for the KRP and my second year as director,” said WKU’s KRP director Jennifer Montgomery. “KRP has had a tremendous impact on teaching and learning, and it has been an honor for me to be a part of it. I love working with the teachers and getting out to visit schools.”

The KRP requires a yearlong, graduate level reading course which consists of two weeks of summer professional development classes as well as four follow-up sessions during the 2009-2010 upcoming school year. Upon completion, teachers will receive three hours of graduate level credit.

The 2009-2010 KRP participants include the following teachers: Lauren Ashby of Burns Elementary in Daviess County; Cathy Flora and Zach Simpson, both of Chandlers Elementary in Logan County; Crystal Britt and Emily Christian, both of Lewisburg Elementary in Logan County; Stephanie Butler of Cumberland County Elementary; Colleen Hunt of Earlington Elementary in Hopkins County; Beth Blandford, Melissa Stahler and Brennan Blackstone, all of Foust Elementary in Owensboro; Amanda Taylor of Highland Elementary in Glasgow; Alicia Stephens from Oakland Elementary, Christina Keltner of Plano Elementary and Catherine Webb of Rich Pond, all in Warren County; Kasey Wilson of South Todd Elementary in Todd County; Mandy Browning of Stevenson Elementary in Russellville; Rachael Cecil of Vine Grove Elementary in Hardin County; Jaime McKown and Becky Phillips, both of Wayland Alexander Elementary in Ohio County; and Nycol Hart of Leitchfield.
