Want to learn how to research grants and become a more effective grantseeker? WKU Libraries will host a free workshop on grantseeking basics and resources for nonprofit organizations on April 28 at the ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships, 1818 U.S. 31-W Bypass.
The workshop will consist of two sessions:
• Grantseeking Basics with Foundation Directory Online from 3 to 4 p.m.
• Focus on the Economic Crisis from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Both workshops will be presented by Kief Schladweiler, Coordinator of Cooperating Collections at the Foundation Center in New York. Established in 1956, the Foundation Center is the nation’s leading authority on organized philanthropy, serving grantseekers, grantmakers, researchers, policymakers, the media, and the general public. Thousands of people are served in its five regional learning centers and its national network of Cooperating Collections.
The Helm-Cravens Library at WKU houses a collection of grant research materials, and is a Cooperating Collection. Through its association with the Foundation Center, Helm-Cravens Library provides successful grantseekers with vital information and training. The library offers free access to the Center’s detailed information on grantmakers and how to apply for grants. The Foundation Center’s core collection includes The Foundation Directory Online, profiling more than 91,000 U.S. grantmakers, Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, print directories, and proposal writing guides.
• Grantseeking Basics is an overview of the funding research process for those seeking grants from foundations, corporations, and grantmaking public charities. The session includes tips on how best to identify funding sources for your nonprofit organization, highlighting the electronic and print resources available for your free use at WKU’s Helm-Cravens Library. The workshop will include a demonstration of the Foundation Directory Online, as well as a demonstration of free resources on the Foundation Center’s Web site.
• Focus on the Economic Crisis provides a wide array of resources to help nonprofits and foundations alike as they face the challenges of an unstable economy.
Kief Schladweiler has been the Foundation Center’s Coordinator of Cooperating Collections since 2005. Prior to that he served as the Center’s online librarian for several years. Schladweiler joined the Foundation Center in 1999 after working as a reference librarian for The New York Public Library. He received his M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
