Civil engineering students win awards at Ohio Valley Student Conference

WKU civil engineering students won several first-place awards last weekend during the 2009 ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Ohio Valley Student Conference.

The WKU surveying team of Ben Monarch of Bowling Green, Clint Ervin of Greensburg and Jenny R. Fairchild of Cromwell placed first in overall performance, first in stake out and second in pacing.

In the environmental competition, WKU placed first in overall performance, first in overall effluent and second in technical paper review. Members of the environmental engineering team are Darren Back of Hazard, Jeremy Rodgers of Bowling Green, Benjamin Webster of Lexington and Lizabeth Likins of Leitchfield.

In the technical paper competition, WKU’s Jeremy Rodgers of Bowling Green placed first in overall performance.

In the concrete canoe competition, WKU placed third in overall performance, second in design paper, second in final product, first in men’s slalom/endurance race, first in women’s slalom/endurance race, first in men’s sprint race, first in women’s sprint race and first in co-ed sprint race.

WKU concrete canoe team members are Magon Kirby of Bowling Green, James Edmunds of Glasgow, Chris Leachman of Campbellsville, Brandon Sanders of Stanford, Mehdi Kariman of Bowling Green, Adam Hock of Erlanger, Kelly Stolt of Nashville, Tenn., Jessica Acosta of Madisonville, Justin Cole of Glasgow, LeAndra Chandler of Owensboro, J.P. Saalwaechter of Bowling Green, Benjamin Webster of Lexington, Sarah Bertke of Owensboro, Erica Rigney of Mt. Washington and Jacob Riggs of Upton.

WKU’s Department of Engineering hosted the regional competition April 2-4. Participating schools were University of Akron, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State Technical & Community College, Cleveland State University, University of Dayton, Geneva College, University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, Ohio University, University of Pittsburgh, Point Park University, Stark State College of Technology, WKU and Youngstown State University.

The event also included steel bridge and concrete disc golf competitions.
