Morgan Eklund, a sophomore English major from Morehead, has won the 2008 Sarabande Student Poetry Competition.
Sarabande Books, a non-profit Louisville publishing company for short fiction and poetry, sponsors the contest annually for undergraduate students from across Kentucky.
Eklund’s poem, “Her Father,” is about Eklund’s roommate’s father who died earlier in the semester and the connections and relationships it created in her own life.
“It is almost beyond words, the feelings I have about winning this contest,” Eklund said. “I’m honored to be recognized on a statewide level for the passion and work I give to the written language of poetry.”
Eklund was awarded the top prize of $500, a letterpress broadside of her poem and publication on Sarabande’s website. Another of her poems, “Complexity of Distinction,” received honorable mention in the contest.
