WKU’s Counseling and Testing Center and BRASS, Inc. (Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc.) are hosting “Be A Lifesaver!” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 30) at Downing University Center lobby.

“October is domestic violence awareness month and often times, we don’t think of dating violence as domestic violence, but it is,” said Elizabeth Mohon, WKU’s sexual assault services coordinator. “We tend to overlook this age group of 16-24 as possible victims in dating relationships. Because this age group is such a high risk, we are working with BRASS to educate and increase the awareness to persons here on our campus.”

Lee Alcott, executive director of Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc., said the group is dedicated to reducing dating violence among young people. “According to the Bureau of Justice, women ages 16-24 experience the highest per capita rates of intimate violence — nearly 20 per 1,000 women,” Alcott said. “It is critical that we educate, support and empower young women. ‘Be A LifeSaver!’ is a campaign to engage friends to help friends recognize the signs of dating violence and access resources.”
